Experience Designer

Design Team · Canada, British Columbia
Department Design Team
Employment Type Full Time
Minimum Experience Mid-level

Domain7 is a change agency fostering innovation through people-centric methods. Our vision is to co-create a more empathetic world. It’s a vision that brings us together, to answer questions about how people organize, how experiences are designed, and how technology is created. Deeply rooted in integrity, over the past 24 years Domain7 has grown into a strongly people-first culture that places empathy alongside sophisticated expertise. Our team of strategists, designers and digital practitioners help organizations shift to healthier, more collaborative and people-centric futures.

Our Experience Designers are highly visible facilitators and makers who work closely with colleagues from a variety of disciplines on both internal and client teams. They are inquisitive and meticulous: surveying both the breadth and depth of a problem space to determine the right problems to be solved, and iterating our way into solutions.

As a facilitator, you will help create the context for collaboration and participation to help us ask the right questions, define user experience and business goals, and uncover opportunities through research and synthesis.

As a maker, you will explore those opportunities through cycles of ideation, prototyping, validation, and finally bringing them to life in pixels and code alongside other designers and developers.

The ideal candidate is curious, human-centric, opinionated about the role of technology in society, and how we might design and make our way into that future. We are seeking experienced practitioners who are excited to work on meaty challenges in the public and for-impact sector, helping lead and nurture our seasoned team on an approach to design that emphasizes partnership and co-creativity.

Our Experience Designers are generalist practitioners that are competent in the full spectrum of digital product design, with varied specializations and focuses. For this role, we are interested in folks with a background  in any of the following: designing for marketing, content, and communication, UI and visual design, design systems, government and public sector, Drupal or other infrastructure-scale CMS.

We recognize that every individual has a unique career journey and experience comes in many forms. Good design comes out of a team with diverse experiences. If your skills and experiences are relevant in any way to what we have described so far, we encourage you to apply!

We welcome applications from anywhere in Canada.

  • Work in close collaboration with external clients, stakeholders, and lead D7 project management, design, and engineering teams to distill complex business processes into intuitive digital experiences.
  • Own design's relationship with clients within projects, ensuring that we effectively communicate and advocate for human-centric solutions.
  • Partner with our project teams in identifying the appropriate design process and methods that best meet the client challenge, and to implement them.
  • Partner with other researchers, designers, and strategists to plan, run and facilitate workshops, field research, and participatory design activities.
  • Synthesize research outcomes into compelling insights that motivate action. These are often documented using artifacts such as process flows, personas, and experience maps.
  • Rapidly ideate, prototype, validate, and deliver solutions alongside internal and external teams. This often involves producing artifacts such as sitemaps, sketches, and both high- and low-fidelity prototypes.
  • Working closely with engineering teams to turn concepts into launched products. Bonus points if you can get your hands dirty with HTML, CSS, and JS.
  • Supporting Project Management and Growth teams with project planning and budget estimates

  • Holistic understanding of contemporary human-centered design, design thinking, and product design practices – their strengths, weaknesses and how they might do better.
  • Background in typical UX research and design activities such as user interviews, A/B testing, heuristic evaluations, rapid prototyping, usability and accessibility, etc.
  • Ability to execute designs from low- to high-fidelity: going from thumbnails and wireframes to polished visual UIs and scalable design systems.
  • Broad understanding and/or ability in the various skill sets needed to deliver a design project, but with deep expertise in one or two. Examples include research, user experience, visual design, animation, prototyping etc.
  • Strong communication and presentation skills (written, verbal and visual) with the ability to be a thought partner/coach to both client and internal teams.
  • Knowledge of web technologies, and their impact on design decisions. Bonus points if you are dangerous with code.
  • Excited to work with a team that emphasizes client and stakeholder collaboration and participation as part of our design philosophy.
